Digital education reading group: February 2025
Our first digital education reading group meeting of the year is coming up in February. This month, our learning technologist colleagues Simon Parr and Niilante Ogunsola-Ribeiro have chosen an extremely relevant topic for us to discuss; we’ll be discussing how AI is changing our roles, and considering the increasingly critical role of instructional design in an AI world.
Resources
Simon and Niilante have chosen an article by Dr. Philippa Hardman (aka “Dr. Phil”), an academic, learning designer, and the creator of DOMS, an AI-powered learning design engine. You can read or listen to the article:
Hardman, P (2024) Redesigning Instruction & Assessment in the Age of AI
They chose this article because it addresses key challenges and opportunities posed by generative AI in education. It includes a compelling case study based on a UoL course redesigned to align with these realities and offers practical insights. They think the article is very readable and the thought-provoking content made it a suitable choice for our discussion.
If you wish to read in more detail, the following paper is the one discussed by Dr Phil in her article.
Hodges, C.B., Kirschner, P.A. (2024) Innovation of Instructional Design and Assessment in the Age of Generative Artificial Intelligence. TechTrends 68, 195–199 https://doi.org/10.1007/s11528-023-00926-x
Key questions for an enriching discussion
Some questions we believe could guide the conversation:
- How do the proposed adaptations in the case study support students’ learning and cognitive skills development?
- How practical is it to implement the approach outlined in the case study? What steps are necessary?
- Have you seen similar approaches elsewhere? If not, what might be the reasons?
- What actions could you take today to align with the article’s approaches?
- What impact might these strategies have on staff, students, and institutions?
- How does our current AI strategy compare to the approaches in the article? What improvements could we consider?
We are looking forward to meeting with you all to reflect on how our roles are evolving and what is possible in practice as we start 2025.
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and ideas! Let me know if you have any questions or need help accessing the materials.
